No award can scale Sachin's greatness: Kapil

Ref : http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/top-stories/No-award-can-scale-Sachins-greatness-Kapil/articleshow/6708507.cms

KOLKATA: India's only World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev on Thursday said no award could actually determine the greatness of Sachin Tendulkar, who has been named as the ICC Cricketer of the Year.

Reacting to the batting maestro's winning his first ICC award on Wednesday, the legendary all-rounder said: "He doesn't require any award. Sachin is so great that no award can measure him."

While, hailing India's thrilling one-wicket win over Australia in the first of the two-match series, Kapil said "Mohali Test once again brought back those good old memories," recalling his team's win in Melbourne Test in 1981 and the tie Test in Chennai in 1986.

The man, who took 434 Test wickets, also advised India to play more longer version cricket.

"Playing 50 T20 matches and 50 ODIs is not good. The team must play a good amount of Test cricket," he told reporters during a promotional event.

Asked to compare between India's Test victory in Mohali and the success at the ongoing Commonwealth Games, he said: "Every victory is important. But at the same time, you can't compare it with other sporting events. Hockey, athletics and cricket are different games and it would be foolish to compare."

Meanwhile, the former ICL chief Kapil denied any rift with the IPL. "There is no rift in cricket. There wasn't any rift between IPL and ICL ( Indian Cricket League). To me everything is the same. I'm only concerned with the development of the game."

Sachin bags 'Cricketer Of The Year' award after seven years

Ref: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/top-stories/Sachin-bags-Cricketer-Of-The-Year-award-after-seven-years/articleshow/6702722.cms

BANGALORE: Sachin Tendulkar kept his tryst with destiny, at long last by bagging the ICC Cricketer of the Year Award at the ICC Awards show on Wednesday evening.

Tendulkar, who has had a brilliant last year (August 24, 2009 to Aug 10, 2010) both in Tests and ODIs, missed out on the other biggies, the Test Cricketer of the Year going to Virender Sehwag, while AB de Villiers, who thrilled the crowd with his off-field talent, was honoured as the ODI Cricketer of the Year.

Tendulkar, who had scored a double ton against South Africa, the first in ODIs by a male cricketer (Australian batswoman Belinda Clark was the first to get to the magic figure), was also voted as the People's Choice, a new award, that is decided by fans across the world, with weightage given for the region they come from, which means he wasn't selected by Indian fans alone.

Speaking after he had received the Cricketer of the Year award from ICC president Sharad Pawar, Tendulkar, who had waited (without bated breath it must be said) seven years for this honour, put it very nicely by saying: "Better late than never."

He went on to term it as a reflection of his performance. "It's great that I have been able to perform and contribute for India. I always want to do something special when playing for India."

Tendulkar best cricketer in the world: Ganguly

Ref : http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/top-stories/Tendulkar-best-cricketer-in-the-world-Ganguly/articleshow/6721004.cms

KOLKATA: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Saturday said Sachin Tendulkar is the best cricketer in the world.

Having played together for years till he retired from international cricket, Ganguly said: "I haven't seen Sir Donald Bradman playing, but I have seen Sachin. To me, he himself is a milestone, and the best cricketer in the world."

The Bengal ace said Tendulkar, who has been bestowed with the the ICC Cricketer of the Year is the role model for many.

"He is 37 now and is still going strong. He has proved that performance is the last word in cricket," Ganguly said.

The Big Three of Indian cricket - Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman - are difficult to replace.

"After they retire, the gap can be filled in. But it would be difficult to replace them. These players are a class apart," he said.

He also praised India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. "Dhoni is undoubtedly a very good captain. He has helped Indian cricket grow. But at the same time, we should not forget that there are players like Sachin and Rahul in the team, who are match-winners. Cricket is a team game," Ganguly said.

Sachin Tendulkar ranked honorary Group Captain First Indian sportsperson to be conferred with the Indian Air Force rank

India's batting great Sachin Tendulkar was on Friday awarded the honorary rank of group captain by the chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF) for his contribution to cricket.

Tendulkar, 37, was conferred the honour by Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Naik, amid loud applause from fellow officers at a ceremony in the Indian capital.

"It was wishful thinking (that I would be part of the armed forces) and it has come true today. I'm extremely proud to be a part of the IAF. So dream, because dreams do come true," Tendulkar said after being inducted.

Naik said he hoped Tendulkar's induction would inspire India's youth to join its armed forces.

"Sachin's association will help in spreading awareness about our force," he said.

Tendulkar is the first sportsperson to be conferred a rank by the IAF and the first personality without an aviation background to receive the honour.

Tendulkar, who made his international debut on a tour of Pakistan in 1989, is the leading run-getter in both Test and one-day cricket.

He has scored 13,837 runs from 169 Tests with 48 centuries and 17,598 runs in 442 one-day matches with 46 hundreds.

Tendulkar is also the only batsman to score a double-century in one-day cricket, making 200 not out against South Africa in Gwalior earlier this year.

His next assignment for the top-ranked Indian team is a two-Test home series against Australia, starting on October 1.

Its a dream of every boy to play with Sachin Tendulkar : Kieron Pollard

Ref :

Kieron Pollard who was floored by Dominic Cork bouncer during Friends Provident T20 final is undergoing a rehabilitation process hoping to be fit before Champions League T20.

Pollard has a special fascination for the tournament as the Champions League T20 2009 made him star overnight.

"I will never forget it . My life changed completely since that tournament last year. I am happy and I’m really enjoying it.”

The all rounder was full of praise for Guyana which whipped his home team Trinidad and Tobago out of Carribean T20 Championship.

"They are a very good team with never die attitude. They are a good bunch and definitely will put a good fight"

This is first time Pollard is touring South Africa , he says " I have never been to South Africa. I have done well in India and England. Now I m looking forward to do well there"

The West Indian all rounder feels his team Mumbai Indians will do well in Champions League T20 but Bangalore will have a very good advantage with the number of South Africans in the team.

"Bangalore has slight edge because of the number of South Africans but it takes one ball to get out. The team that does the basics right will win"

He said he learnt a lot from his Mumbai Indian captain Sachin Tendulkar

"Sachin is in his class of own. He lifts the enthusiasm in the team and shows how to perform in the middle. We have got to learn from him and I've learnt a few things from him. It is a dream of every boy to play alongside someone like Sachin Tendulkar"

Regarding his batting position in the Mumbai Indian team he said "I am comfortable at any position. I am not the one who says that I want to bat low or up the order. My role is to perform and It doesn't matter where I bat or bowl. Team win matters to me"

Pollard will represent Mumbai Indians in Champions League T20 starting next month in South Africa.

Biography contains Tendulkar's blood

Ref : http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/21072010/58/biography-contains-tendulkar-blood.html

A special edition biography of Sachin Tendulkar will contain drops of the cricket legend's blood.

Ten books are being printed with a signature page made of Tendulkar's blood mixed with paper resin.

Each edition of the 'Tendulkar Opus' weighs a mammoth 37kg (80lb) and has gold leaf on each of its 852 pages. They have been pre-ordered at a staggering £49,000 apiece.

The 37-year-old Indian batsman is the highest run scorer in Test match and international one-day history, and is his country's most popular personality.

Publisher Karl Fowler said: "What you'll be looking at is his genetic makeup. Some may think it's weird but to millions he is a religious icon.

"And we thought how, in a publishing form, can you get as close to your god as possible?"

Around 1,000 regular copies of the book, with no blood, are also expected to go to press, costing between £1,500 and £2,500.

The Tendulkar book is the 13th member of the Opus family, which includes Manchester United, Arsenal, Celtic and Diego Maradona.

Sachin, Ratan Tata, DMRC symbols of integrity for youth, says Kalam

Ref : http://www.mynews.in/News/Sachin,_Ratan_Tata,_DMRC_symbols_of_integrity_for_youth,_says_Kalam_N71416.html

Former President A P J Abdul Kalam today shared that the country's youth ranked Ratan Tata, Sachin Tendulkar and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation as symbols of integrity.

Mr Kalam was addressing a gathering on the launch of former Comptroller and Auditor General C G Somiah's appropriately titled work 'The Honest Always Stand Alone.' ''I recently asked some young students to name people in the field of industry, sports and public sector who symbolise integrity. They named Ratan Tata, Sachin Tendulkar and even the Delhi Metro!,'' he said.

The former president rued how corruption, more than a vice, had become a way of life and people were losing sensitivity.

''Our conscience has become corrupt and we are losing sensitivity. This is what we are passing on to the next generation,'' he said.

Urging for greater transparency in the country's governance through computers and other technology, he said, ''Funding for elections and real estate should be debated upon.'' ''The results of the schemes should reach the beneficiaries,'' he added.

He also opined that the honest do not always stand alone.

''It is felt that the honest always stand alone.

But they are not always alone because they inspire many more role models,'' he said.

Mr Somiah was the Comptroller and Auditor General from 1990-96 and was the first Indian to be elected as member of the United Nations Board of Audit by the UN General Assembly in 1993

The book recounts his days as a bureaucrat and also narrates his experiences in fighting terrorism in Punjab, his stint as the country's home secretary and Central vigilance Commissioner.

Hundred in Chennai after 26/11 my best: Sachin

Ref :

Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar rated the century he scored in Chennai against England that helped India chase 387 runs in the fourth innings soon after the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai as the best of his career.

"It was not about the Test match but about something which happened two weeks before that. Something that had happened in Mumbai. It was difficult to prepare for a Test (under those circumstances). It was gracious of England to come here," Tendulkar, who alongwith wife Anjali, hosted a fund-raising dinner for the 'Crusade against Cancer Foundation' here.

"There were all sorts of talks around and then suddenly all our focus was on the match. England dominated the match for almost four days before Virendra Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir brought us back into it," he recounted.

"Generally when we win, it is the ground-smen who run to congratulate us, but on that day the grounds-women rushed to congratulate us. It was just because of something that had numbed the nation," he said.

"By no means India winning a Test match could compensate the lives lost. But for our team, we had succeeded in bringing a fraction of a smile on the faces of the people. That is why the hundred in Chennai Test match will be the best (of my career)," Tendulkar said.

He scored an unbeaten 100 as India upset all calculations to score an unlikely six wicket victory over England while chasing a target of 387.

Wimbledon invites Sachin to Royal Box

Ref :

Mumbai:
That Sachin Tendulkar is a tennis fan is known. His love for Wimbledon is also well documented. He never misses an opportunity to watch ‘live’ action on the hallowed lawns of Big W. He was seen there last year. He will be seen this year too.

However, this time, the Maestro will be there as a guest rather than as a visitor. He will watch the proceedings ‘live’ from the box. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club has invited him to witness the matches from the Royal Box. His invitation is for June 26, the first Saturday of the Wimbledon fortnight. It is also known as Sporting Saturday when guests from the field of sports are invited.

As a guest to the Royal Box, Tendulkar could be watching the match alongside Tim Phillips, the Duke of Kent, who also happens to be the life president of All England Club. “That’s right. The Duke should be there alongside him,” a spokesman for the club said.

The invites are sent by the club “taking into account suggestions from members of the championships’ organising committee.” The Royal Box has a capacity of 74 seats with dark green Lloyd Loom wicker chairs.

When approached, Tendulkar confirmed the invite and his acceptance. “Yes, I have been invited there and I will be going,” he told DNA. Wimbledon starts on June 21. As per a club communication, British and overseas Royal Families, heads of government, the world of tennis, media organisations are among those who get invited to the Royal Box.

Tendulkar, however, has a dress code to follow. Protocol says: “dress is smart, suits/jacket and tie etc.” The other protocol to watch from the Royal Box is that ladies should not wear hats, “as they tend to obscure the vision of those seated behind them.”

Sachin to join campaign against drugs

Ref : http://www.indianexpress.com/news/Sachin-to-join-campaign-against-drugs/638158/
Mumbai :

Starting Saturday, master batsman Sachin Tendulkar will promote a no-drugs campaign for the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). The campaign, mostly targeted at those in the 18-30 age group, will feature the star cricketer advising people to “Think health, not drugs”.

NCB zonal director Yashodhan Wanage said, “Tendulkar is a youth icon; he epitomises health and fitness, which is the theme of our campaign. He has agreed to be part of the campaign and accordingly, his posters with anti-drug messages will be put up across the city.”

The campaign follows a United Nations resolution that directed anti-drug enforcement agencies across the globe to observe and promote June 26 as the International Day Against Drug Abuse.

Wanage said many cases had shown youngsters were easy targets for psychotropic substances. “The reasons have been different; peer pressure, lifestyle, or bad influence, the cases are on the rise. It is very important to curb the menace of drug addiction at a very young age.”

Sachin Tendulkar dreaming of winning T20 World Cup or Fifty50 world cup

London, June 15: Arguably the most accomplished batsman of contemporary times, Indian icon Sachin Tendulkar still has unfulfilled dreams, one of them being to win the World Cup for his team when the event comes to Asia next year.

Tendulkar, the highest run-getter in the Test and one-day format of the game, hopes to play in the final of the World Cup when it is jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh early next year.

“As far as the World Cup is concerned it is a process. We don’t want to jump to the 50th floor straight away, we must start on the ground floor,” he said.

“We must take it step-by-step but to get there would be a fascinating journey. It is our dream, not just mine but the entire nation, to get there.

“To play the final in Mumbai is something you can only dream of and everything has to come together,” he added.

Tendulkar said if India played to their potential, there was a good chance of being in the finals of the event.

“I think we can do something we have been longing to do for quite some time,” he said.

Part of the Test side which is currently the world number one in ICC rankings, Tendulkar said the tough part was not to get there but would be to maintain it.

“To be number one is special, it was our dream and our target to get to the number one spot in Test cricket,” he said.

“We have had a good run in the last 20 months. Everyone wants to be number one and we cannot relax because there are other countries who want to be number one. It means a lot to us,” he added.

The 37-year-old once again parried queries on his future maintaining that he would quit the moment he felt that he had stopped enjoying his game.

“I want to play for as long as possible and as long as I have the desire and the hunger I will carry on,” he was quoted as saying by a website.

“The day I do not want to get out of bed and do anything then I know it will be time to go in another direction,” he added.

IAF confers honorary Group Captain rank on Tendulkar

Ref : http://beta.thehindu.com/sport/cricket/article482545.ece

The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Wednesday announced it will confer the rank of Honorary Group Captain to national cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar under the provision to grant such a rank to eminent personalities.

In recognition of his glorious achievement as a cricketer, the IAF had mooted the proposal to bestow an honorary rank and the President of India, in her capacity as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, gave her assent, a Defence Ministry release said here.

Besides the recognition, the IAF said Sachin Tendulkar’s association with the Force will motivate the younger generation to join it and serve the country. Till date the government has granted honorary ranks to 21 persons including noted industrialists and aviation enthusiasts J.R.D. Tata and Vijaipat Singhania.

“I am very proud to be associated with this dynamic force and I shall do my very best to be a brand ambassador for the IAF. I am looking forward to familiarising myself with the Indian Air Force. I once again salute the IAF for this great honour bestowed on me,” Sachin Tendulkar told the IAF, the release said.

Mr. Tendulkar is currently away from India and the IAF plans to hold a special ceremony during which the rank will be conferred.

As per the IAF records, former ruler of Jawhar, Yashwant Rao Patangshah Vikramshah Mukane was the first to be granted the honorary rank of Flight Lieutenant on September 30, 1944. The list includes rulers of a number of erstwhile princely States.

J.R.D Tata was first made an honorary Group Captain in 1948, later promoted as Air Commodore in October 1966 and finally made the honorary Air Vice Marshal in 1974.

Mr. Singhania, was the last to be granted the honorary rank in October 1990 after he flew round-the-globe in a micro-light aircraft.

SACHIN's CENTURIES

Year 2010:

44th Test century: The master batsman started the new year with another century. Though against the minnows, his 44th century came under testing circumstances. India, who played their first Test of the year against Bangladesh in January, were heavily let down by their batsmen in the first innings in Chittagong. Out of 243 runs, Sachin scored 105 and saved India blushes. While wickets were tumbling from one end, Sachin at the other end dig deep and kept the battle on. He was adjudged 'man of the match' for his fighting knock.

45th Test century:In the second Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh, Sachin slammed another ton. As compared to the hundred scored in the first Test, this one was a more relaxed one. During the process, he had a 200-run plus with Rahul Dravid for the third wicket.

46th Test century:Sachin slammed 46th hundred of his Test career on the fourth day of the first Test against South Africa in Nagpur.

His fourth century against the Proteas was also his first at home against them.

In reply to South Africa's 558 runs, India were bundled out for 233 runs. South Africa enforced follow-on and picked top four wickets. Sachin rose to the occasion and hit his 46th ton. Unfortunately, his resistance ended soon after his ton as Paul Harris deceived him with his spin for 100 runs. However his ton went in vain as India slumped to an embarrassing defeat by an innings and six runs

47th Test century: Hurt by the Nagpur sting, India reached Kolkata for the second Test. After Indian bowlers wrapped up the South African innings for 296, Sachin along with Sehwag got down to the batting business. He made his 47th Test ton, his fifth against the visitors. Having played four Tests so far in 2010, Sachin has made centuries in each of them.

SACHIN's CENTURIES

Year 2008

38th century: Sachin started the new year on a high Down Under. During the second Test against Australia in Sydney, Sachin made an unbeaten 154 runs as his 38th Test century. However, some umpiring blunders gave Australian an edge over the Indians in the match that was well in visitors' grasp.

39th century: After a forgettable Sydney Test, India moved to Adelaide for the third Test. Sachin carried his form to the Adelaide Oval and made 154 runs to get his 39th Test ton, which was also his 80th international hundred. The match ended in a draw.

40th century: Sachin got his 40th ton at Nagpur during the fourth Test against Australia. The four-match series was aready in India's pocket, but Sachin's innings of 109 runs helped India put up a good total. India won the match by 172 runs and clinched the series 2-0 to lift the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. During the same series, Sachin surpassed Brian Lara's record of maximum Test runs. It came during the second Test at Mohali.

41st century: Many called this knock as Sachin's one of the best Test knocks. After condemnable terror attacks on Mumbai, India played England in Chennai. And the Mumbaikar made that match a historic one. If Virender Sehwag set the stage, Sachin along with Yuvraj Singh chased the total with an hour to spare for the close of the match. He made unbeaten 103 runs and dedicated his 41st ton to all his countrymen.

Year 2009

42nd century: It came at a place which proved to be Indian batting's graveyard in 2002-03. India went to New Zealand this year after that debacle tour. It was tipped to be one of the toughest tour as nobody knew how the conditions were.

After Indian pacers ripped the Kiwi batting apart in the first Test at Hamilton, Sachin got down to his task and slammed 160 runs for his 42nd ton. Most importantly, his knock backed by lethal bowling gave India a win in New Zealand after a gap of 33 years.

43rd Test century: Sachin celebrated his 20 years in Test cricket with an unbeaten 100 runs in the second innings of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Ahmedabad in December 2009. There were seven centuries scored in that match. Failing to score in the first innings, Sachin scored a subdued 298-ball 100 runs in the second.

SACHIN's CENTURIES

Year 2004

32nd century: Scoring a mammoth unbeaten 241 against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney on January 4, 2004, it was the beginning of a high scoring year for him. This was his highest Test score yet.

33rd century: A controversial decision by the then captain Rahul Dravid to declare the innings, cost Sachin from reaching another double hundred score. India declared their innings with Sachin at a score of 194 with just 6 more runs to reach what would have been his 4th double ton.

34th century: Nine months later he finally got his fourth double ton when he slammed an unbeaten 248 runs against Bangladesh during the first Test in Dhaka. He celebrated his double ton with another milestone as he equalled Sunil Gavaskar's Test record of 34 centuries. It was indeed a proud moment for the two Little Masters, who are great admirers of each other.

Year 2005

35th century: It took Sachin exactly a year to surpass his idol Gavaskar. In 2005, Sachin played six Tests making 444 runs. He missed out on a hundred against Pakistan in Mohali when he was dismissed for 94 runs. And then there was a long wait..

On December 10, 2005 in New Delhi, he got his 35th Test ton against Sri Lanka. He contributed 109 to India's 290 on a tricky Kotla track where Muralitharan was at his wily best. As they say all's well that ends well, India won the match by a big margin of 188 runs.

Year 2007

He started the year on a decent note when he hit a fifty in the third Test against South Africa at Cape Town.

36th century: He next toured to Bangladesh for a two-Test match series. He hit 101 in a rain-hit first Test at Chittagong.

37th century: Sachin hit back-to-back centuries in the series. In the second Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka, he raised his 37th ton with an unbeaten knock of 122 runs. Three other Indians made centuries in the same match - Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik and Rahul Dravid. However, Sachin walked away with the 'Man of the Series'.

SACHIN's CENTURIES

Year 2000

23rd century: What was turning out to be a rather quiet year for Sachin turned completely around when he scored 122 runs against Zimbabwe at the Feroz Shah Kotla Ground in New Delhi on November 21, 2000. India went on to register a win in that match.

24th century: Just five days later, Sachin scored a double ton for the second time in his career. Staying unbeaten at 201, India drew the match playing against Zimbabwe at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground in Nagpur.

Year 2001

25th century: Sachin's 126 runs on March 20, 2001 were a major contribution in India's win against Australia at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

26th century: Even though India lost the match to South Africa, fans were still cheering Sachin who scored 155 runs.
